Amtrak Ticket Refund Policy – How to Cancel Your Train Reservation with Amtrak

Amtrak Train provides passengers in the United States and 9 Canadian cities an intercity service. It serves over 500 destinations and operates more than 300 trains every day. With its convenience, a lot of people are trusting their service. It also gives customers the freedom to choose the best type of fare that suits them. And because of that, canceling or requesting refunds is no hassle at all when you choose to ride with Amtrak Train.

How to Cancel Reservation with Amtrak Train

If you purchased your ticket online

Canceling reservation is easy if you purchased online through Amtrak Train’s main website

Cancellation Policy of Amtrak Train

Follow these steps:

Step 1: Log into your account. 

Step 2: Click the ‘My Account’ at the top of the page.

Step 3: The ‘View/Edit’ button will bring you to your reservations.

Step 4: After that, you can click the ‘Cancel Trip’ button. 

Step 5: You will see the instructions provided after that. Just follow those.

Note: If you made changes to your trip after booking it online, you may not be able to cancel it online.

If you purchased your ticket elsewhere

Even if you purchased or made reservations using a credit card, eVoucher, station agent, Quik-Trak Kiosk, or on the phone, you can still cancel it through Amtrak Train’s main website

Cancellation Policy of Amtrak Train

Follow these steps:

Step 1: Click ‘Modify Trip’ at the top right corner of any page of their website.

Step 2: Enter your reservation number and email or phone number used. 

Step 3: Select ‘Find Trip’.

Step 4: After that, you can click the ‘Cancel Trip’ button. 

Step 5: You will see the instructions provided after that. Just follow those.

Please note that there may be cancellation fees that will be applied. Also, not all tickets are eligible for cancellation, it may vary on the fare you selected.

Amtrak Train Types of Fare

Amtrak Train offers passengers the freedom to choose the fare that best suits them. People can choose the fare that’s best for your travel needs.

Saver Fares

Types of Service: Reserved Coach, Acela Business Class

  • The cheapest among other fares.
  • It has limited availability so advance booking is required.
  • It’s non-refundable 24 hours or more after booking.
  • Changes or upgrades are not applicable.
  • Upgrade Coupons are also not allowed.
  • Passenger type and promotional discounts are not valid.

Value Fares

Types of Service: Unreserved Coach, Reserved Coach, Acela Business Class

  • It also has limited availability
  • Available on all routes of Amtrak.
  • Full refund to the original form of payment or eVoucher without fees if the cancellation was made 15 days or more before departure. 
  • If canceled less than 14 days before departure, there will be a 25% fee charged.
  • It’s free of charge if changed 15 days or more before departure.
  • If changed less than 14 days before departure, there will be a 15% fee charged.
  • No fee for unreserved tickets.
  • The change fee is waived for Select Executive members.

Flexible Fares

Types of Service: Unreserved Coach, Reserved Coach, Acela Business Class

  • Offers a full refund to the original form of payment or eVoucher without fees if canceled before departure.
  • It doesn’t require change fees as well.

If you plan to frequently change your reservation even at the last minute, but still want a full refund, Flexible Fares is the best option.

Business Fares

Types of Service: Acela First Class

  • Offers a full refund to the original form of payment or eVoucher without fees if canceled before departure.
  • It doesn’t require change fees as well.
  • Amtrak Guest Rewards members can earn a 25% qualifying bonus point for Business Class travel.

Premium Fares

Types of Service: Acela First Class

  • Offers a full refund to the original form of payment or eVoucher without fees if canceled before departure.
  • It doesn’t require change fees as well.
  • Amtrak Guest Rewards members can earn a 50% qualifying bonus point for Acela First Class travel.

Types of Service: Sleeper Accommodation

  • Refund to the original form of payment.
  • If canceled 15 or more days before departure, there will be a 25% fee charged. 
  • Only refundable to non-refundable eVoucher with a 25% cancellation fee within 14 days of departure 
  • It doesn’t require change fees as well.
