Sponsored Parent Visa (Subclass 870) – How To Get a 5 Year Australia Visa?

How To Get a 5 Year Australia Visa

With a Sponsored Parent Visa, you can stay in Australia for 3 or 5 years up to a maximum of 10 years. You need to hurry, however, as only 15,000 visas can be granted every financial year.

For those who want to apply for a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 870)

Who are Eligible to Apply for a Sponsored Parent  Visa?

  • Biological, legal (including adoptive) parent, step-parent, or parent-in-law of the Sponsor
  • At least 18 years old
  • With Approved Parent Sponsor
  • Met previous visa obligations (e.g., no overstays)
  • Meet Health Requirements
  • Meet Character Requirements
  • With access to enough money to support yourself in Australian
  • Stays in Australia Temporarily and do things the visa allows you (e.g., no working)
  • Have Health Insurance
  • Without Debt to the Australian Government

Costs or Expenses in getting a Sponsored Parent Visa

  • Visa Costs AUD 5,090 (3 years) to AUD 10,180 (5 years)
    • This can be paid through 2 installments, usually, AUD 1,050 initial payment then remaining paid before Visa is granted
  • Health Checks (depending on where you will apply, in the Philippines it’s PHP 6,000)
  • Police Certificates
  • Biometrics

Documents Requirement for an Applicant

1. Valid Passport

Philippine Passport

2. Proof of Change of Name

In case your name is different in the passport and the marriage or birth certificate of your children, you can pass additional documents like marriage or divorce certificates, etc.

3. Character Documents

  • Complete this Form
  • Police Certificate from every country (including home country) where you spent more than a year in for the last 10 years since you turned 16
  • In case you served in the Armed Forces in any country, attach military service records or discharge papers

4. Supporting Documents

  • You can also attach your Bank Certificates or Assets in your country to prove you have money
  • Health Insurance

Processing Time

  • It may take as long as 4 months for your Visa to be approved

Who can be an Approved Parent Sponsor?

Either of the following:

  • Australian Citizen
  • Permanent Resident Visa of Australia for at least 4 years
  • Eligible New Zealand Citizen usually resident in Australia for at least 4 years

Other Requirements to be eligible:

  • At least 18 years old
  • The child of the applicant (be it biological, legal, step or in-law)
  • No debt to the Australian Government
  • Taxable Yearly Income is at least AUD 83,454.80 (if you can’t afford this, you can combine your partner or sibling’ s incomes to reach the threshold. Your income must be at least 50%)
  • Meet Character Requirements
  • Agree to share information
  • Comply with sponsorship obligations
  • Can only sponsor 2 parents per household

Requirements for a Sponsor

1. Residence or Citizenship Documents

May include:

  • Citizenship Certificate
  • Passport Bio-page
  • Valid Visa (in case you are not an Australian Citizen)
  • Evidence of Settlement in Australia

2. Proof of Relationship

Copies proving that you are a child of the person you are sponsoring:

  • Birth or Marriage Certificates
  • Adoption Certificate
  • Family Certificates

3. Financial documents notice of Assessment by the Australian Taxation Office, please black out your tax file number before submission

4. Character documents

  • Australian Police Certificate issued by the Australian Federal Police
  • Police Certificate from every country you spent a year or more in in the last 10 years since you turned 16

5. Sponsorship Application Fee – AUD 420

How to Apply to be an Approved Sponsor (for Sponsor)

STEP 1: Check if you are eligible as a Sponsor, and so is the one you are sponsoring.

STEP 2: Gather your documents and scan them to make it easier.

STEP 3: Follow these steps:

1. Log-in or Create an ImmiAccount.

2. Go to “New Application”

3. Select “Family” and then “Sponsorship for a Family Member (870)”

4. Answer the questions for your application.

5. Attach the documents needed.

STEP 4: Pay the sponsorship application fee of AUD 420. Please note of your Sponsorship Transaction Reference Number.

STEP 5: Wait for the decision. In case there is additional information needed, you will be contacted.

STEP 6: A decision in writing will be given to you with the Sponsorship Transaction Reference Number, Date the sponsorship is approved, and the Sponsorship Obligations. Give the TRN to your Parent who wants to apply.

5. Attach the documents needed.

STEP 4: Pay the initial application fee.

STEP 5: Wait for the reply of the immigration. You may be asked to provide biometrics and undergo a medical examination. You also may be asked for other documents. Please also pay the balance of your application fee.

STEP 6: A decision in writing will be given to you with your visa grant number, visa start date, and conditions. Keep a copy of the decision and book a flight to Australia!

  1. Hi I was granted my 870 parent visa in March 2020 but due to the covid lockdown unable to go. Was just enquiring will my 5 year visa get extended or will it expire after 5 years. Also after 5 years how do I extend visa for another 5 years, will I have to be sponsored and pay the fee again. Thanks
