It is said that the history of this small church-turned-parish cathedral dates back to 1581 when the Augustinians set up their mission in Kalibo. The original site was in Laguinbanwa, Numancia where it was established as a parish under the advocacy of San Juan Bautista. When the town has transferred some two kilometers from Laguinbanwa in 1804, the parish church was rebuilt to its present location. A charming combination of simplicity and functionality in its interior makes the church an ideal place of worship.
