Steps to Applying for a US Tourist Visa (for Filipinos)
1. Know which Visa you’re applying for.
There are two kinds of US visas:
- Immigrant visa – for people who plan to settle down in the US
- Nonimmigrant visa – for people who are just going to stay for a short time
Ex: vacationing, seeing doctors, studying, handling business
Filipinos usually get a non-immigrant visa. Most apply for:
- B1 for business
- B2 for tourism
- B1/B2 for both business and tourism
This article is focused on the B2 US Visas for those visiting relatives and sightseeing.
2. Fill up your DS-160 form properly.
This step is very important to your application. Make sure to double-check it before submitting it.
The interview questions will be based on your answers here. If you are not sure what to type, save it and go back to it later.
You’ll also need to submit a passport-sized photo online. Make sure to prepare it beforehand.
Make sure to have a screenshot or photo of the confirmation page at the end.
I’ve explained more about this on my how to fill up your Form DS-160 article.

Tip: The smallest wrong information can lead you to be unapproved. So make sure to recheck a couple of times.
3. Pay the right Visa fee.
The US Visa application fee is $160 as of now. But note that the price can change because of the exchange rates. You’ll need to check before paying.
You have two options to do it: through authorized banks or online. The payment is a must and is non-refundable, too. No payment, no interview appointment!
Tip: Take note of the receipt number. You will use it when you book an appointment.
4. Book a date for your Visa interview at the embassy.
When your DS-160 is ready, you can now choose your interview schedule.
Now, this is very important. Don’t rush in booking your appointment. Baka mablanko ka during interview. It should be a date you’re comfortable with, Make sure you can have all your documents ready by then. If you’ll need to travel to the embassy, consider that, too.
Also, the slots are limited. If your chosen date is unavailable, you’ll have to check again in a few weeks or months.
5. Prepare your Visa requirements and supporting documents.
Have the following requirements ready:
- DS-160 confirmation page
- Appointment letter
- Valid passport
- Photo
Here are supporting documents you might need:
- Bank certificate or bank statements
- Invitation letter (if sponsored)
- Certificate of employment or No Objection letter
- Business registration
- Proof of relationship
- Income Tax Return
Tip: Bring these documents just in case. You can be denied just by not presenting a document. Its best to be ready for anything they ask for.
6. Prepare for your interview.
This is the most critical step. This is where you receive approval or denial for your US Visa. Your answers should:
- Match the information on your DS-160
- Be honest
- Be spoken calmly and clearly in English
- Be practiced well (in front of the mirror, for example)
You might want to try using sample questions and answers during the US Visa application interview. Those with partners in the US will also need to consider another set of questions.
Many US visa applicants get nervous, not because they lack documents, but because they struggle to answer clearly in English. Clear, calm communication leaves a strong impression on the consul. Some applicants practice using structured programs like Rosetta Stone’s lifetime language learning program, which focuses on speaking and listening rather than memorizing grammar rules.7. Be dressed well and get there on time.
You should be there 15-30 minutes before your appointment schedule. Showing up late can cost you your application.
Wear the right clothes and present yourself well. Don’t bring items that are not allowed. These include phones and watches.
In greeting the interviewer, make sure to smile and be polite. Answer the questions directly and be honest. Stay relaxed and positive, too.
After the interview, you might be told immediately if you are accepted or rejected. But some cases could require more time before the decision is made.
