Things to Do in Gent, Belgium and Our Experience Staying at Design B&B Logidenri

Ghent or Gent is a city and a municipality located in the Flemish Region of Belgium. Boasting with early Flemish Architecture, Gent is easily considered as Belgium’s most beautiful city. 

The original plan was to buy a motorbike in the UK and then drive all the way back to Montenegro when I get back from my 2-month adventure in Central Asia. However, because of the car accident that happened to me in Pakistan, some things have to change. Instead of buying his motorbike, we had to use our car instead. 

After a 2-hour drive from the ferry at Calais, we finally arrived in this beautiful city! It was rather an easy drive and we even arrived 2 hours earlier for our check-in at our bed and breakfast,  Design B&B Logidenri. It was a good excuse for Jonathan to walk around the city as he pushed me in my wheelchair. That’s the positive thing about all of this, I get to rest while Jon does all the work! Haha. Anyway, for this article, I’ll share with you can do for a weekend in Gent and our stay at Design B&B Logidenri. 

THINGS TO DO IN GENT, BELGIUM 

1. Join a walking/biking tour

Walking or biking around Ghent is such ease as the whole city (especially the historical center) is pedestrian-friendly. We even saw a lot of students biking their way to school. WOW! Joining a tour is the way to go to learn about this city. There’s truly more to life than the dazzling Flemish architecture that you can see with your eyes. Knowing the story behind it will make your trip much more interesting. 

2. Go on a boat trip

Travel back to the medieval times as you embark on a 40-minute boat ride in the Leie River. You’ll surely enjoy this boat ride as you pass by the Towers of Ghent, medieval castles, fish markets, and even old guildhalls.

3. Go inside the Gravensteen Castle

As the only surviving “castle of the count”, this is one thing you shouldn’t miss in Ghent. The audio guide will usher you through its halls and rooms and is very worth the price. Climb up one of the towers to see a panoramic view of the city.

4. Admire the view from St. Michael’s Bridge

One of the best spots to see the beauty of Ghent is from here where you’ll get to see the canal, the buildings alongside it, and the 3 towers of Ghent. Not only that, this is a perfect spot to have that nice photo! Actually, this area is prettier at night!

5. Have a picnic by the canal

Head on to the supermarket to buy food and some beer if you please, find your spot by the canal, enjoy your food, admire the view, and watch the world go by.

6. Visit museums

Engage yourself in knowing Belgium’s history by visiting STAM Ghent City Museum as well as the Museum Voor Schone Kunsten which is home to exquisite artefacts and precious information.

WHERE WE STAYED IN GHENT, BELGIUM

For this short trip, we stayed in a wonderful bed and breakfast called Design B&B Logidenri, a place which is a perfect blend of classic style and sophistication. It is located right in between the art district and the city center and is only a few minutes away from all the city’s attractions.

Do we recommend them? Hell yeah and here are the reasons why! 

1. Each room is unique

Having been completely refurbished by the owner who happens to be an architect, each room is unique yet all of them have the same contemporary and classical style depicting a charming interior. 

2. It has all the hotel amenities you’ll need

Staying in a B&B doesn’t mean that you need to compromise on the comfort which you can get from a hotel and Design B&B Logidenri offers exactly that. 

Our room has a Street/park view with southern oriented terrace on the 3th floor, twin beds with reading light per person, en suite bathroom with walk-in rain shower, washbasin and toilet, closed gas fire, writing desk with free wifi internet, LCD/LED screen television with DVD, Geneva audio system with docking station for your iPod, Nespresso coffee and tea maker, refrigerator, central heating with thermostat control, soundproof and solar control glazing, built-in storage cupboards and air conditioning. The building also has an elevator which is perfect for my wheelchair. Haha. I mean, what else will you be looking for? 🙂

3. You’ll get a beautiful view

If you love to open your windows to a beautiful view, then you can get a room located on a high floor or the ones by the courtyard. Ours is called the Fifth Room and we had such a nice view of the city! 

4. The owners are really nice and very hands-on!

We’ve met Didier who is the co-owner of the property when we checked in and his partner, Nathalie, was there the next day during our breakfast. They assisted me and Jon throughout our stay and I couldn’t be any grateful to them. Everything went smooth from check-in to check-out and they were there to answer all queries and if we needed anything. Very nice couple!

Overall, we highly recommend a visit to Ghent and to stay at Design B&B Logidenri. We will definitely be back!

We weren’t able to go around the city that much because the cobblestoned roads are making it hard for us to do it with a wheelchair. Nevertheless, we’re looking forward to the day we return (hopefully next time on Jon’s motorbike).
