While the country slowly begins to re-open, now is a great time to plan an exciting road trip. After months of watching travel shows from the comfort of your home, you probably already have a list of places that you are anxious to explore for yourself.

A road trip is a great way to renew your senses and get some much-needed adventure. You don’t need to end up being stranded on the side of the road after a breakdown. If you plan on heading out for a road trip, ensure there are a few things you should do to prepare. After you update your car insurance, it’s time to take care of some general maintenance on your car.

Let’s take a look at a few things you should address to prep your car for an epic road trip.

Fluids

Your car fluids are vital to keeping your engine running smoothly. Before you head out for your trip, you need to make sure that all of your essential fluids are fresh and full.

Oil

Radiator

  • It’s essential to keep your engine cool with a filled radiator. A low antifreeze level can result in overheating.

Brake

  • Flush your brake system every 25,000 miles and make sure that your lines are full before your trip.

Power Steering

  • Keep your steering lubricated with regular fluid changes every 50,000 miles.

Windshield

  • Visibility is the key to enjoying your road trip. Make sure to fill up your washer fluid reservoir and keep an extra bottle in the truck if you hit bad weather.

Tires

Getting a flat or wobbling down the road on unbalanced tires can turn your road trip into a nightmare. Before you leave, check your tires carefully for wear and wobble. Make sure that your tires are properly inflated to ensure a smooth and fuel-efficient trip.

Brakes

If your brakes are making noise when you try to stop your vehicle, it’s a good bet that your brake pads need to be replaced. Brake pads are essential to safe driving. Test your brakes and have a quick inspection done before your adventure.

Lights

If you have a head or tail light out, you could end up getting pulled over on your road trip. Make sure to check all of your interior and exterior lights before you take off.

Belts and Hoses

Even if you don’t know much about your engine, you can check your hoses and belts before leaving. Your belts should be firm without too much flexibility, and your hoses should be dry and leak-free.

Taking care of these simple car maintenance chores can save you time and money while you are on your trip. Check your fluids, fill up your tires, and get out there and enjoy a trip to remember.
