Long Weekend in the Ocean View Penthouse of Grand Laguna Beach in Sosua, Puerto Plata

Ishi, The Sea Cat, passed away a few weeks ago (she’s our newly adopted cat). It was heartbreaking for us, but it consoled us thinking that she lived her best life before she passed away. She had very good food, new toys, and a new family who set her free.

We didn’t leave the sailboat since then. We were so sad, but Ahab keeps us happy. We still have him, after all!

So when we realized about our pre-arranged trip to Grand Laguna Beach (which is, by the way, pet-friendly), we decided to go for it and take Ahab with us on a rented SUV for $27/day! It’s his first ‘staycation while on vacation’ with us, and he loved every minute of it!

About The Grand Laguna Beach

This seafront aparthotel is just a  5-minute drive from Cabarete, Puerto Plata. Grand Laguna Beach offers a semi-private beach area and a salt-water pool with waterfalls and a grotto bar. Free Wi-Fi is available in the apartments and common areas.

Puerto Plata is in the Northern part of Dominican Republic. It’s known for Expats (mostly from Canada) who are moving here during the winter season. Yes, a foreigner can buy condos or any real properties in this country which could help in getting a permanent residence to the owner thereof. Maybe one day we can have a property here too. Haha!

The Rooms At The Grand Laguna Beach

The modern and luxurious air-conditioned apartments at this aparthotel include a flat-screen TV with a wide range of cable channels, a comfortable bed, air conditioner, and a full toilet and bath.

All apartments (1BR/2BR/3BR/4BR/3BR Penthouse Deluxe)  offer a dining area, seating area, marble floors and a fully equipped kitchen. Some also have a furnished patio.

We stayed in a 3 BR Penthouse Deluxe where we also had an infinity plunge pool which overlooks the ocean. There’s also a massive infinity pool at the ground floor. We have such huge space, and our cat loved running around!! It is bright from all the natural light coming in, and it made the perfect staycation atmosphere ?

The Penthouse suite has all the amenities that we needed, and they even provided us a daily cleaning service which made us feel like VIPs :p

The Food A Grand Laguna Beach

There’s only one restaurant-bar inside the property of the Grand Laguna Beach which is called Grotto, but there are two major supermarkets within 3.5 km of Grand Laguna Beach. Several restaurants can be found within 4 km of the property, and many will deliver directly to your apartment.

This is a self-catering Aparthotel which means that you can cook inside your room, hence the fully-equipped kitchen (we have a big oven, stove top, microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator, coffee machine, and a barbecue griller on the rooftop). My husband has been the one cooking our food, and it’s really good– we get to eat what we want at a lower price! It is also easy to do groceries because there are two big supermarkets here compared to small stores in Luperon.

Area Guide

There are plenty of things to do around and from Punta Plata. This includes horseback riding, dune buggy driving, scuba diving and windsurfing. Here are some other things you can do around the area:

Canyoneering at the 27 waterfalls of Damajagua Park- No this isn’t a typographical error. There are 27 waterfalls in this park, and you can see, swim, and jump on one or all of them in one day!

Windsurfing/Kitesurfing- Cabarete is famous for its strong and constant winds perfect for this kind of sport. For all the adrenaline junkies, you’ll love this!

Chill by the beach- Choose from the Grand Laguna Beach, Encuentro Beach and Cabarete Beach, and you’ll get a dose of vitamin sea 🙂

Horseback riding at the Equestrian Center/Sea Horse Ranch The Equestrian Center at Sea Horse Ranch offers organized tours on over 7 miles of bridle paths and beaches as well as instruction in riding, dressage and jumping for advanced riders and novices alike. This is a perfect way to spend the day 🙂

Hike at El Choco National Park- El Choco is a very good eco-tourism site. This is a place where you not only hike; you learn as you go along. The tour guides here are very knowledgeable about the flora & fauna, and they are very happy to show you what they know. Swimming in the pool cave is the highlight of the hike!
