Caterpillar is known for their durable machinery and footwear, due to the dynamic market demand Caterpillar now got a series of rugged phones that will surely fit our active travel lifestyle.
I represented the Two Monkeys Travel Group on the product launching of the latest rugged smartphone of Caterpillar and Bullitt Group, The CAT® S40 Smartphone. Few bloggers from different niches have been invited to see for the first time the latest addition to the rugged phones of Caterpillar.
CAT® S40 Smartphone
This awesome gadget will surely withstand all the tough environments and active lifestyle. As a travel enthusiast, this is a great fit for our needs and wants, and you can check out the phone specifications here.
Inside the pack:
The CAT® S40 Smartphone can stand the drop of 1.8 meters (6ft.), with its IP68 Certification, the S40 is dustproof and waterproof it can be submerged under water up to the depth of 1 meter for an hour. You don’t have to worry about dropping your phones (literally anywhere), cracked/scratched screens, damaged/scratched phone and you can now use your phone whatever weather conditions, active sports or activities, etc. Sounds pretty cool, I tried it myself. Please watch the video.
The operating system of S40 is Android 5.1 Lollipop, very user-friendly (you need your Gmail account to set up the phone) and with Quad core processor. The Caterpillar also made their own App Toolbox, that will enable you to download all the apps you will need and tailored to the CAT® phones users.
The phone has a 4.7″ Gorilla Glass 4 with a super bright display, actually much brighter than my other phone. The S40 also got another feature that will enable you to have different profile users, so you don’t have to keep on changing accounts and resetting your phone every time your partner, friend or siblings wants to borrow it when they go traveling.
Battery life is really important for us travelers as you don’t wish to run out of power in the middle nowhere. The phone’s battery life is outstanding. Considering its high and robust performance, it can last for approx. More than 10 hours of constant use (depends on apps and usage). If you have it in standby mode, the phone last for weeks, seriously!!
Connectivity and Network
The S40 has Bluetooth connectivity and wifi ready, very important! So we can upload our awesome pictures & videos in our social media profiles etc. It also an has the audio jack for your earphones (the earphones included with the phones would probably need more enhancement when it comes to sound quality). Since the phone’s OS is Android & with Bluetooth and wi-fi, you can use it as your GoPro remote, using the GoPro App, you don’t have to worry that it will get damaged by any weather conditions.
The CAT® S40 Smartphone got a dual sim card feature and 4G ready! As a traveler, this will make our life easier because there will be no need for another phone to get your local sim card whenever you are abroad and can also let you have a faster internet connection, of course this is still subject if your network & area are compatible. Reminder, you will need a nano sim!
Camera and Audio
CAT® S40 Smartphone has a 8 Megapixel (the on camera) and 2 Megapixel (front facing, for all your selfies! LOL!)
Here are the photo comparison and samples of the S40 camera:
The camera of S40 is pretty good & decent to take your daily snaps while you are travelling, I like the HD lens of the camera. It might need some improvements in the zoom in features. You might still need to use your posh DSLR camera or digital compact cameras to capture your travel photos in higher resolution.
For the audio quality of S40, it is pretty loud and good quality when you plug in your earphones. When you put the phone in a loudspeaker mode, the phone is still strong enough in a room setting however not loud enough when you have other noise in your surroundings. I have tried to use it while having a shower and listen to some songs in Youtube, and I can barely hear the songs. I think because of the phone is well built, the casing partially covers the speaker.
