So if you are going to India then a visit to Bangalore (old name) or Bengaluru (official name since 2006) is a not to miss experience.

The capital city of the Karnataka region in the South of the country, a lot is going on here. The city is rich in history, it’s got both local history and a colonial past making it a fascinating place to visit.

There is so much history in the area, it has a long traditional history and was the headquarters of the British administration from 1831 to 1881 and there is fascinating architecture and there are many to choose from. Bangalore Palace is a modern royal palace, built-in 1944 and an impressive building that was actually designed to resemble Windsor Castle, showing that even in the dying days of colonial rule the British influence was still there. What about the Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace which was the summer residence of the Mysorean ruler Tipu Sultan or the impressive 18th Century Bangalore Fort.

There are so many beautiful places in and around the area of Bengaluru, we could go to Bannerghatta National Park, a nature reserve with a huge variety of wildlife and preserved natural areas. There are safari opportunities, a zoo and even a butterfly park which is great for the kids. Another option is Lalbagh Botanical Garden, originally opened way back in the 18th century, so a great mix of natural beauty and history.

Where to eat and drink, of course, makes any trip and especially the evenings and nights. There is a lot to be said for finding good places. There are a few ways to do this, ask around and find out what the locals say is always a good idea and also to research in advance online, you can find a great deal on restaurants as well getting up to 50% discount on Bangalore restaurants while also being able to read reviews by those who took these offers up.

There is a great wealth of places and opportunities to shop here in Bangaluru. From the markets of Commercial Street and Chickpet where you can get almost anything from fashion to jewelry and so much more, these are great traditional experiences. There is also something like the Phoenix Marketcity, which is a massive super-mall if the more modern shopping experience is your thing.

If getting out and about and taking on activities is more your thing there is also so much to do in the local area. There is indoor snowboarding at Snow City, go-karting or off-road 4x4s, there is even a full-scale amusement park called Wondrela which is well worth a visit if that’s your kind of thing. So it just goes to show that if you have a good look around there’s always more than just the typical tourist things to do.​
