Majestic Kotor is one of Montenegro’s top tourist destinations. Kotor Old Town is the best spot to stay and base yourself on for the rest of your vacation since it has the right blend of spectacular nature, mountains, the sea, and an outstanding historical legacy.

One of the best things to do when visiting Kotor is to climb the 1350 stairs of the Walls of Kotor, where you may take some of the most well-known pictures of the Old Town of Kotor.

Getting lost in the charming streets and learning more about the town’s historical buildings are other “must-dos” when visiting. Don’t forget to go on a guided walking tour that includes a stop at the Maritime Museum.

Cozy bars & restaurants, with stray cats that will happily jump into your lap, baroque castles from the Venetian era that dominate the town with their greatness and beauty, and delightful restaurants with tasty local seafood are only add-ons for your experience, instantly stitching Kotor beneath your skin! Once you’ve been here, you’ll always want to return.

Recommendation: Resto Bar Taraca is the only restaurant in the area with a vegan/vegetarian menu!

2. Float over to Lady of the Rocks

The image of the little, isolated island church surrounded by majestic mountains is among the most well-known ones of Montenegro. The church, known as Our Lady of the Rocks, is located in the heart of Kotor Bay, across from Perast, on a manufactured island.

While the narrative of Our Lady continues, as the church on the island still runs and welcomes thousands of people each year, the long and turbulent past of this former nautical center will leave you speechless.

You can take a taxi or a local bus to get to Perast from Kotor, and you can take a regular taxi boat to get to Our Lady. However, the best way to understand its significance and the history behind it is to book a private tour that includes transportation. This way, you won’t have to worry about anything, and your tour guide will ensure you have an amazing time.

While the church itself is worthwhile, you shouldn’t pass up the opportunity to get a fresh perspective of the Bay of Kotor and the nearby mountains.

3. Go on a boat tour of Skadar Lake.

This is one of the most gorgeous and untouched locations you will ever see; the images do not do it credit. A favorite destination for ornithology enthusiasts, this area is home to over 280 different species of birds, or almost half of all the bird species in Europe.

A boat excursion is the most fantastic way to properly enjoy Lake Skadar’s magnificence. Either Virpazar, which is readily reached by bus or train, or Rijeka Crnojevica are good starting points for this activity. Whatever choice you select, you are in for a treat because the trips range in length and areas visited.

After the boat ride, don’t miss the most well-known Lake Skadar viewpoint, the horseshoe bend at Rijeka Crnojevica, also known as the “Pavlova Strana Viewpoint.” This scene frequently appears on postcards from Montenegro, and the view is breathtaking. Explore it with Great Montenegro Tour

4. Zip-line in Durmitor

You may experience an adrenaline rush on the zipline in Durmitor from May 1 to October 1. The attraction is above Europe’s largest canyon and close to the Djurdjevića Bridge across the Tara River.

One of the world’s longest ziplines, measuring 1050 meters in length, is one of the alternatives available. If you don’t mind heights, speed, and the vastness of the surrounding area, this is surely an experience you shouldn’t pass up.

The price for a single trip on the zipline in Durmitor starts from 10€. Durmitor itself is a highlight of Montenegro, so make sure to visit!

5. Rafting on Tara River

The UNESCO World Heritage List includes the Tara River Canyon, which at 1300 meters deep, is the second-deepest canyon in the world and the deepest gorge in Europe.

Rafting on Tara is the only way to truly experience a place. You should definitely include this tour in your schedule for Montenegro if you enjoy the sea and a little adventure.

There are many different tours available, including multi-day expeditions and day outings from well-known locations like Kotor. You’re going to have a great time with either one you pick!

6. Spend the Night on the Posh Island Sveti Stefan

The gorgeous island of Sveti Stefan, which is connected to the shore by a short tombolo, is one of Montenegro’s most well-known sights when traveling south from Budva.

It was established as a protected fishing settlement in the fifteenth century. Nevertheless, the island was transformed into an opulent 5-star resort in the 1950s, and now many well-known celebrities enjoy taking vacations there.

If you feel like treating yourself a little during your vacation in Montenegro, this is the place where you should be.

7. Go Hiking

While the vast majority of visitors to Montenegro focus on the coastline, the region also has some fantastic hiking opportunities. Since the name of the country also refers to mountains, a huge part of it is covered by them.

If you want to hike, Montenegro could be the ideal place for you to go. Durmitor National Park, Prokletije National Park, Lovćen National Park, and Biogradska Gora National Park are the greatest hiking destinations that also provide breathtaking landscapes.

8. Experience the Spirituality of Ostrog Monastery

The most spiritual and religious place in Montenegro is the Ostrog Monastery, which is north of Podgorica and a well-liked destination for tourists. The monastery is a part of the Serbian Orthodox Church and honors Saint Basil of Ostrog, who was laid to rest here in 1671.

Regardless of whether you are religious, the location has a very spiritual aura, especially if you go on May 12th, the anniversary of Saint Basil’s passing, when the most remarkable ceremonies take place.

The setting of Ostrog Monastery is also rather stunning because it is attached to the rocks above the plateau. The monastery is not accessible by public transportation, but you may get there by car or on a tour. Book your tour with 360 Montenegro or rent a car in Montenegro.

We recommend taking the North Montenegro Tour or Spiritual Montenegro Tour.

9. Take a boat tour of Boka Bay

Going on a boat is one of the most incredible ways to take in the gorgeous Boka Bay. You see the area from a completely different angle on the boat, which makes you appreciate the natural beauty of the surroundings even more.

You may also go to places with the boat that are ordinarily inaccessible, such as the Blue Cave or the former military tunnels. Additionally, spending a day on the sea is always a great way to spend a holiday.

10. Visit the Mausoleum in Lovcen

Jezerski vrh mountain is in the heart of Lovcen National Park (1657 meters above sea level). Even though it isn’t the tallest, this mountain is perhaps the most significant one in the park.

The tomb of Petar Petrovic Njegos, one of Montenegro’s greatest rulers, is located at the peak of the mountain. He selected this location as his ultimate resting place.

From the parking area, you must ascend 461 stairs to the tomb, but once there, you will be blessed with a breathtaking view of the Montenegrin Alps. According to legend, on a clear day, you can see 70% of the country from that location.

The mausoleum itself is a fascinating piece of construction. The memorial of Petar Petrovic Njegos is within, sitting with his legs crossed, and is accompanied by an eagle. The golden mosaic is located over the statue. Two enormous statues of women, Petar Petrovic Njegos’s mother, and sister, guard the area.

Unfortunately, there are only two ways to get to Njegos’s mausoleum: by car or on a tour.  Book your tour with 360 Montenegro.
