Easter Island is a territory of Chile, South America which is located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean and at the southeastern-most point of the Polynesian Triangle. It is also known as one of the most remote islands in the world and listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Hotel Hangaroa Eco Village & Spa – Easter Island
As a World Heritage Site, there as plenty of reasons to visit Easter Island. Here, you get to see the famous Moais (long – faced structures, which represented the Polynesian ancestors) and appreciate the simple yet interesting lives of the locals. And I have to say, the scenery and landscapes in Easter Island are just outstanding! Trust me, you don’t need to have expensive or top-of-the-line cameras to get the perfect shot here. The raw beauty of the island can be captured easily, by even a non-pro photographer like me!

I’m so glad that Jon and I were able to have a unique cultural experience with Hotel Hangaroa Eco Village & Spa. It was one of the best ways to explore Easter Island’s natural beauty. The hotel is true to its commitment that they want their guests to feel the gift of life after staying in their property. And what a way to spend the holidays as they arranged private tours with our personal driver, a local Rapa Nui, who was hugely knowledgeable and passionate about Easter Island’s rich history and culture.
Why would we recommend staying at Hotel Hangaroa Eco Village & Spa? Here are some of our observations during our stay
The People
What made our stay even more enjoyable, was how the people from Hotel Hangaroa Eco Village & Spa treated their guests. It was nothing short of great, gentle and genuine. I have all praises to the staff of the property. They are accommodating and passionate about their work. It actually completes the whole ‘relaxing and refreshing’ vacation we all deserve.

Room & Facilities
When we were shown to our sea-view room at Hotel Hangaroa I was amazed at how much natural light flooded in through the full-height sliding doors, which led out to our own private patio. The first thing I had to do was jump straight onto the kind size bed with my favourite white bed sheets and duvet!

Kainga Room – The rooms range from 484 to 527 sq. ft. and have an overlooking view of the sea. They have loads of facilities such as a sofa bed, handmade clay bath tub, shower, telephone, internet connection, safe and minibar. Interestingly, there is no television in the room, but that’s deliberately done by the property so the guests can temporarily disconnect from their ‘usual’ world and experience the true tranquility of Eastern Island.
Maunga Room – If you want more space, opt for Maunga Room where you also get the same amazing view of the sea. The living area is also massive should you want to entertain your guests. And as always, no television in the room. Well, who would need one when you have an amazing view like that?
Vaitea Pool – This is the largest pool in Eastern Island where guests can enjoy the facility whole year round.
Spa Manavai – Apart from the therapies that can awaken your senses, the view of the Pacific Ocean makes the experience unforgettable. I’m pretty sure you would fall asleep with relaxation instantly!

Mana’u Event Room –This one would be the best choice for smaller groups as it can house up to 70 people.
Nuna’a Meeting Room – Ideal for conferences and small group discussions – this room can fit 12 people.
Food
Our stay included the breakfast, lunch and dinner. And I have to tell you, we couldn’t get enough of it! I’m glad that the food was fresh and healthy as well as delicious, or else I could really have gained some weight here!

Boat Rides
See Eastern Island from a whole different perspective, by taking a boat tour around the island.
Boat Fishing
Fishing is one of the main sources of living in Eastern Island. You can even learn a few tricks from the real local fishermen. Remember not to try fishing on your own though, as the whole island and its waters are protected and strictly regulated. Only the local Rapa Nui have permission to fish from the rocks and the shores.
4×4 Adventures
Jon and I rented a big motocross bike to do a big loop around the whole island. While we were at it, we went to the white sand beach and it was one of the best things that we did. It was USD 50 per day and I honestly felt it was quite hefty. However, it was worth it for the experience. The alternative option is to rent a car, or organise a guided jeep tour with a company like Mahinatur, who have a travel desk inside the Hangaroa Hotel!

If you are going there, expect to find a real life paradise, fiercely protected by its people to preserve it for future generations. It’s definitely a must-visit place and an escape from a very ‘commercialized’ civilization. All I could truly say was that, ‘I feel like I belong here.’ In fact, I’m starting to think that Filipinos are more Polynesian than Asian. What do you think? 🙂
