Ever since we were all young, regardless of being born a Filipino or another nationality, parents will always be parents. Back in my younger days, it’s either my mother or father who will scold me if I haven’t prepared my things for school, a vacation, or even on any event weeks or even a day before– I wasn’t organized when I should be. So, growing up I accustomed myself to be organized. Now, I am very organized as ever. From shoes, uniform, clothes, files – everything has to be set beforehand. This was one of the things which I had proudly learned from my parents as I wouldn’t have survived this world today.

The second thing I learned from them is initiative. If you don’t have it, you won’t have a fallback, you won’t have a plan B. To be honest, I didn’t know what initiative truly meant while they (parents) were telling me about it – until I got to experience it myself! Working outside a country is not easy. You may have a good salary but then other expenses are also there: food, transportation, rent, grocery, and extra money to send home or for your traditional “pasalubong” (souvenirs) for your family, relatives included. And if, for an unfortunate reason, you get sick – this will be at your expense also.

This taught me how to be initiative when it comes to budgeting my meals, to keep my extra expenses low. Buy pasalubongs which I have enlisted within my budget for souvenirs. “Save more, spend less” was my motto. But then I had bigger dreams. Traveling the world was a thought to me and I didn’t know it would become a reality.

On a budget trip to Thailand, where I, my brother, and sister went backpacking for the first time. And here’s where I became resourceful. We slept at hostel dorms to spend less, took public transportation, and ate the local cuisine just by the streets. These weren’t your dream travel or backpacking experience but we still had money in our pockets even as we went home.

Organization and having the initiative are one of the vital things you should bear in mind while pursuing your goals. These two simple words are also vital in your preparation as you face your daily routine. These are also the essential values to consider as we prepare to sail off through the corners of the earth with our mobile home in the next days to come –  our 40ft Finnrose 1971, S/V Empress!

We looked into the factors we may need before we set sail across oceans and seas:

1. SAILING LESSONS. How will you sail smoothly through rough waves if you don’t even know the basics in navigating your way through the waters? It is important that you take up lessons before you start challenging larger waves. Take up a course in sailing or get basic sailing lessons, you can just Google them up and be surprised that a school may actually be near you.

2. GET A SAILBOAT OR YACHT. If you want to travel around the world with a sailboat – buy yourself one beforehand. If you think it’s too expensive, just rent but I can’t guarantee that you can take it sailing around the world for months. So, better have yours and save for who knows how long. You’ll get it if you truly want it!

3. GROCERIES: FOOD & NECESSITIES. Do your groceries that would last you about two weeks or even a month. Chances are you won’t be finding the nearest supermarket while you’re in the middle of the ocean. So, stock up your grocery cabinets with food or get your fishing rods, bait, and buckets ready coz you’ll be out fishing while you’re living in the ocean/sea.

4. SAILING GEAR. Earth is so wonderful that any country’s climate may differ from the other. The one up north could be colder while the one in the Tropical region, warmer. Nevertheless, you will need a specific set of sailing clothes for you to easily adjust to it. These outfits can be found in your nearest sail store or a trusted online portal. With technology evolving and the materials innovating, it’s best that you take it for granted while it’s still there.

In Jonathan’s and my part, we couldn’t really go out and find the nearest sail store anytime being busy with work and all whilst Jonathan’s attending to Empress, so we could set off and sail in the next month or two.
